Age-Adjusted Death Rate due to Obstructive Heart Disease

Select a County
Measurement Period: 2020-2022
This indicator shows the age-adjusted death rate per 100,000 population due to obstructive heart disease, including heart attacks.

Why is this important?

Individuals with obstructive heart disease have weakened heart pumps due to prior heart attacks or blockages in their coronary arteries. Heart disease occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries that supply blood to the heart and the arteries narrow (atherosclerosis). There are many modifiable risk factors for atherosclerosis including tobacco smoking, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, and high levels of low-density lipoprotein in blood serum. General heart disease is a term that encompasses a variety of different diseases affecting the heart and is the leading cause of death in the United States accounting for 25.4% of total deaths. Moreover, it is important to note that heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States.
