Programa de Manejo Personal de la Artritis

An Evidence-Based Practice

Description

The Programa de Manejo Personal de la Artritis (Spanish Arthritis Self-Management Program) is a workshop for Spanish-speaking people with arthritis and other rheumatic diseases. The workshop is given in community settings such as senior centers, churches, libraries, and hospitals. The culturally appropriate programming is provided in Spanish by non-health professionals who also have arthritis. The participative workshop covers topics including appropriate exercise, use of medication, communicating effectively, use of the health care system, and how to evaluate alternative treatments. Participants receive mutual support and learn techniques to deal with frustration, pain, fatigue, and isolation. Participants receive a companion book, relaxation tape, and audio exercise tape.

Goal / Mission

The goal of the Programa de Manejo Personal de la Artritis is to improve personal arthritis management among Spanish-speaking adults with arthritis.

Results / Accomplishments

One year post-trial, participants had improvements in exercise, general health, disability, pain, self-efficacy, and depression (p < 0.05) when compared to baseline.
